September 2008

NEXT MEETING September 9 at 6:30 PM
ANNUAL BANQUET Barker Tavern, 21 Barker Road, Scituate.
This is a chance to catch up with club friends, meet new members, and enjoy the beautiful setting and outstanding food of Barker Tavern. Please bring a special item from your garden, a workshop or craft item, or a photo memory from the past year to share on the Harvest Table and help us kick off the new club year.

HANOVER FOOD PANTRY
CLUB COLLECTION – WHAT TO BRING!
In addition to making a cash donation to the Hanover Food Pantry this September in lieu of banquet favors, we will have a collection basket at the meeting to gather canned or boxed items and fresh produce for the Pantry.

Glenda Larson says the Pantry needs: canned fruit and vegetables (especially peas & green beans), nonfood items (e.g. tooth paste & women’s products--pads, tampons). When Glenda asked about fresh foods, Barbara replied with an emphatic, “YES! Any fruit or vegetables that are not directly perishable are fine as we will give those out again the same week and our clients are thrilled with fresh stuff. Thank you so much for your concern and help.”

So bring fresh potatoes, onions, squashes, beans, cabbages, apples, oranges, etc. Please--no soup, canned tomatoes, or cranberry sauce—they’ve got plenty!

THIS IS THE ONLY MONTH WE WILL HAVE A FOOD COLLECTION BOX. We told the Food Pantry we would be doing this, so please help the club make a good showing.

“SHOP FOR A CAUSE” SEPT 20th Suzanne Mahler will have Macy’s “Shop for a Cause” coupons for sale at the Banquet again this year.
The coupons at just $5 each entitle the bearer to a 20% discount on a broad array of merchandise not often discounted one day only, Sept. 20th. The proceeds come directly to the “cause”—in this case WHGC! An easy no work mini fundraiser for us.

HONEY SPINNING with JEANNINE DOYLE – SPECIAL JUNIORS MEETING
SATURDAY, SEPT 6th, @ 9 AM rain or shine.
Look for a special email from Sandra Woodward with details.

READ YOUR YEARBOOK! As always, the new Yearbook will be available for pick up at the September banquet. Read through your copy to see the committees you have been assigned and your hospitality month. The Holiday House Tours committees are also listed, so be sure to look for your committee. Remember, you are responsible to follow through on your assignments. If you can’t do it, arrange with another member to swap dates and responsibilities and let your captains know! If you cannot attend the banquet, your Yearbook will be mailed to you.

NEW MEMBER TEA Sept. 7 1:00 PM Ellen Butler’s home.
New members in 2007 & 2008 who have not previously attended a new member tea are urged to attend. Call Ellen.

TOWN BEAUTIFICATION
The traffic islands and town plantings look wonderful this year -- despite a run-over and paved-over few. And Leslie Murphy, Linda Oman and the team did an outstanding job planning, planting and maintaining the island at St. Mary's Church. Kudos to everyone who worked on any of our town projects.

SUMMER DELIGHTS! If you took in any of the three informal strolls through member gardens last July, you know what a wonderful variety of gardens our members have: Dan Pushee’s surprising and creative garden art, Dorothy Gullicksen’s peaceful new shade garden and stone walks, Leslie Murphy’s charming woodland clearing and “found” garden chair planter, Linda Oman’s amazing terraced water gardens, Mugsie Sarson’s matured garden retreat, and Suzanne Mahler’s beautiful perennial borders. All different and all fun to explore. Thank you one and all for the spectacular show and for sharing your pride and joy!

HYPERTUFA The July 19th workshop at Leslie Murphy’s was a great success thanks to Leslie’s and Donna Collins’ prep and hard, dirty work to make it easy for the rest of us to have a fun time. All who participated took home a great project.

FAMILY FUN AT HANOVER DAY
Mary Koch and the face painting team had children lined up again this year waiting to become Spiderman or Elvin princesses. Children posed for parents with cameras in Jennie Griffith’s photo op “Kids in Bloom” garden patch. Discerning adults enjoyed our mini “art in bloom” as they viewed the arrangements of Donna Kirby, Teri Mallory, Shirley Minott and Linda Oman created to interpret paintings and sculptures by local artists. A great time was had by one and all.

Mary Koch and a happy subject.

If anyone has photos of WHGC summer activities or town plantings, please bring them to display on the Harvest Table.
