TWO AWARDS, STATE AND NATIONAL In
February of 2005 Walnut Hill Garden Club learned that the North South River
Watershed Association had received a grant from the Environmental Protection
Agency allowing each South Shore community to establish a rain garden in their
community. The grant allowed $2000 to create the garden in each town. The first vice president of Walnut Hill Garden approached the
board of Hanover Garden Club with the request to work together to build the
garden. Several
meetings were held with the Department of Public Works in Hanover to find a
suitable location. Finally after 2 years of searching, the area next to the
parking lot of the parish hall of the First Congregational Church of Hanover was
selected. Dr. Sara Grady, NSRWA and
administrator of the grant, agreed the site met all requirements. Several businesses in Hanover donated materials and labor to finish the garden by our target date of June 16, 2007. Wyman’s Garden Center provided the plant material at a below retail cost. Both clubs maintain the garden on a rotating schedule.
