Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover will hold it’s biennial public plant
sale on Saturday, June 14, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Riley Hall, First
Congregational Church, 515 Hanover Street.
Spokesperson, Louise Sironi, reports the sale will feature thousands of
select plants from member gardens and from some of the finest gardens across the
south shore, all at affordable prices. Included are colorful daylilies, iris,
hostas, ornamental grasses, ground covers, shrubs and much, much more. The
public is invited to come early for the best selection, and urged to bring plant
trays, crates and boxes to carry purchases home. Said
Sironi, “The club is very fortunate this year. We had a huge donation of
plants from the owner of a lovely Scituate garden that must be dug up because
the home is being sold. As a result we have hundreds of high quality plants from
that garden, as well as from our own members’ gardens—a bonanza of
exceptional and highly desirable plants!” This is
the first time the Walnut Hill sale will be held at the First
Congregational Church’s Riley Hall. In prior years, the club has held it’s
sales in member gardens. “We know the public enjoyed the sales in our
members’ gardens. It was a chance to tour a private garden while shopping for
plants. What could be better to a gardener! However, at our last sale in 2006,
we were hit by major rainstorms—literally washing out the garden where we held
the sale and drenching both plants and our members. Although we sold all our
plants because gardeners are intrepid about weather, it was pretty miserable,
and the garden we were using was pretty well trodden down. We had to aerate the
lawn afterwards. We decided we just couldn’t face the prospect of that
happening again, so we opted to have the sale indoors. “We were lucky
to be able to secure Riley Hall at the First Congregational Church here in
Hanover Center. Our sister garden club, the Hanover Garden Club, always holds
their very popular sale at this location in mid May. With weather so
unpredictable these days, we decided to stay with our customary June date. I
just hope there will be room for all the plants!” For more
