May Meeting: MAY PLANT AUCTION
TUESDAY, MAY 10TH, CEDAR SCHOOL, 7 PM.
(Note change in date, time and place!)

· Please bring 3-5 plants (perennials, annuals, small trees or shrubs).
· Labeled with plant variety name and color
· Pot in loam or potting soil, water and keep protected until auction.
· Daylilies and hostas are always popular.
· Plants should be dug in advance (3-5 days to ensure transplantation recovery) from your garden.
· For those with new landscapes, consider helping a friend, family member or neighbor separate their perennials or you can purchase plants at a local nursery.
· All members are expected to participate in this bi-annual Club fundraiser. Either drop off plants with another member if you can’t come to the auction or a $10 contribution is acceptable.
· Guests are definitely welcome and you should either help them provide 3 plants or let them know they should bring in 3 plants for the auction.
New members may wonder about how the auction works. It has always been a major annual and now bi-annual fundraiser that involves all Club members. Suzanne Mahler will be our auctioneer and she does a great job of describing the plants, their habits, and how to grow them. Many of us in the past have filled our gardens with the “children” of our Club friends. This night is always a great event. The auction is a great way to pick up a plant from your fellow gardeners that you may have always coveted. Here’s your chance to gain new plant material and help your Club. Please pay attention to the weather predictions so that you get your plant contributions ready in advance. AND BRING YOUR CHECKBOOKS!!!

Payment is due on Friday, May 20th, and Geraniums will be picked up at Nelson Copy Supply (199 Winter St.) warehouse between 4 PM and 5:30 PM. The remaining geraniums will be sold to the public on Saturday morning in front of Town Hall. We start at 9 AM and usually sell out within an hour. CALL SUZANNE FOX TO FIND OUT THE COLOR SELECTION AND TO PLACE AN ORDER. YOU MAY ALSO ORDER ONLINE-CHECK OUR WEB SITE by clicking on the email address at the bottom of the page. We will still have signups for geraniums at the auction meeting.

Attendance Policy: As a reminder, members are required to attend a minimum of 4 meetings/year in order to continue your membership in good standing. The normal membership requirement is 5 meetings/year. The board recently voted to require only 4 for this year, due to snowstorms. Please contact Ellen Butler if you have any questions on how many meetings you have attended. It is your responsibility to sign in at every meeting.

Interest Finders: The forms were handed out at the April Meeting and/or mailed to everyone. Please return them to Jan Guimond along with your $20 WHGC 2005-06 dues ASAP. A $5 late fee will be applied for dues received after 6/15/05. No dues will be accepted without an Interest Finder! Make a separate check if paying at the Auction.

WHCG FIELD TRIP PLANNED: A field trip to Heritage Plantation in Sandwich, MA is planned for Friday, June 10th. Heritage Museums & Gardens was once the former Charles O. Dexter estate. Over 76 acres of gently rolling hills, the plantation is a showplace for the colorful, distinctive rhododendrons. Other items of horticultural interest include a Holly Dell and Daylily, Herb, Hosta and Heather Gardens. We will meet at the Hanover Bandstand and drive in a caravan of cars. Please call Teri Mallory to sign up and for more details. (781-871-4212). Hopefully this trip is planned to view the rhododendrons at their best!

GREEN CONNECTION MULCH: Once again, the guys of the Green Connection are offering WHGC members a discount for certain products even though they had substantial fuel hikes. Call them at 781-878-6852 and tell them you are a WHGC member. (Organic Mulch, Super Loam, and Compost are the discounted items.) We are grateful for the $4.00 per yard discount. Thanks Tim and Paul!

News From the State Federation Board: Many dishwasher detergents contain phosphates which are reputed to harming the environment. Phosphates promote the growth of algae. There are “green” products available. Here are some  ENZYME- CONTAINING POWDERS that are PHOSPHATE-FREE: Trader Joes’ Powder at 19 cents per load; Seventh Generation Powder at 25 cents per load; and Ecover Natural Powder at 37 cents per load. Other possibilities are Great Value Powder by Wal-Mart and Electrosol tablets, although Electrasol does leave some hard-water spots.  Avoid gel products, Gel's aren't very effective because enzymes usually aren't compatible with gel formulations.
