TIPS FOR THE MONTH

A NEW SEGMENT  ADDED TO THE WEBSITE NEWSLETTER

This will later follow the Nutsey News, once members' realize it's a new addition.

THREE BASIC NEEDS FOR GERMINATION:

  1. WARMTH: most seeds should be between 70-77 degrees. Some perennials do best  between 60-65 degrees. Heating cables, the top of the refrigerator or the top of the hot water heater may be used.
  2. MOISTURE: Moisten potting soil from the bottom up. Soil should not be soggy. Cover container with plastic wrap to create a mini greenhouse.
  3. LIGHT: Many seeds need light to germinate. In this case, do not cover with soil, or do so very lightly. Those which require darkness can be covered with additional soil or a newspaper. Rule of thumb; Cover seeds to their thickness if ho other directions are given.

What's needs to be done in March, and what's happening outside.

  1. Plants to start in EARLY MARCH-  Aster, Artichoke, Carnation, Petunia, Egg Plant, Dusty Miller, Snapdragon, Onions, Geranium, Statice, Pepper, Impatiens, Strawflower, Perennials

  2. Still  time to prune fruit trees.

  3. Plants to start in MID MARCH-  Ageratum, Cabbage, Calendula, Lobelia, Cauliflower,  Celosia, Nigellla, Lettuce, Cleome, Broccoli, Cornflower, Gomphrena, Tomatoes, Eggplant, Peas, plus all the ones listed for Early March.

  4. Prune sweet autumn clematis now. Flowers are borne on the current season's growth. Prune other clematis types AFTER blooming, if needed.

  5. Check the soil acidity for Hydrangeas, use aluminum sulfate for  BLUE HYDRANGEAS, add lime for PINK HYDRANGEAS.

  6. Prune Buddleia, Rose of Sharon, Spirea, Mockorange.

  7. Prune rhododendron, lilacs, viburnums and azaleas AFTER flowering.

  8. Don't fertilize perennials yet, fertilize perennials when soil temperatures reach 50*, which isn't until about May.

  9. Now is the time  to give bulbs granular fertilizer; either 5-10-5 or 10-10-10. Try to keep granular fertilizer off the emerging leaves.

  10. Did you know that knotting or braiding the leaves of bulbs reduces their ability to photosynthesize and may increase the risk of "blindness" (leaves and no flowers)?

Monarch butterflies are beginning their migration north. Robins will be out this month.

BOOKS IN BLOOM - FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2003

PREVIEW PARTY AT THE JOHN CURTIS LIBRARY

JOT THE DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW!

Okay, so picture this…

A mid-June, early summer’s evening…ladies in their colorful seasonal outfits, men in seersucker pants (well, it could be that way)…music wafting up through the rotunda, cool bowls of punch and trays of wonderful goodies to sample, friends and neighbors having a wonderful time and…and…BOOKS! - IN BLOOM!

The anticipation is growing for our exciting event scheduled for the evening of Friday, June 20th.

Our club does not plan a major fundraiser this year, so we have decided to direct our efforts, creativity and boundless energy to staging this entertaining and elegant evening fundraiser for the newly expanded and renovated John Curtis Library. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the new library, I strongly encourage you to go - it is really beyond expectations.

Patterned on the Museum of Fine Arts highly regarded "Art in Bloom", our "Books in Bloom" will feature floral designs created by members of Walnut Hill G.C. and Hanover G.C. paired with books, movies or tapes chosen by each participant. These can range from children’s books, detective stories, movies and music, non-fiction, biographies, short stories - the possibilities are almost endless.

The night of the 20th of June, we will stage a "Preview Party" for which we will sell tickets to club members and to the general public. We expect a large turnout for the event as all of Hanover is justifiably proud of our new library! The last time we had a similar occasion at the library (about 10 or 12 years ago), the feedback was phenomenal. People really enjoyed themselves! Others who had not attended were ultimately disappointed that they hadn’t gone. This event will be billed as a night not to be missed.

This is quite a large undertaking for our garden clubs. We plan to install 42 separate designs in spots that have been scouted throughout the library building.

And so, we need:

bulletDesigners
bulletRefreshment help
bulletA ticket committee
bulletStaging help
bulletSomeone who will help produce the program
bulletSet up and clean up volunteers.

In short, there will be plenty of work to go around, but the payoff will be being involved in what is sure to be a memorable community event.

In preparation, two workshop nights will be held - these are open to all - not only to those who have agreed to design for the affair. All are welcome! To be held at the Phoenix Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 29 - Shirley Minott will conduct a lecture and demonstration. She will present designs that she has created, will talk about ways in which one can interpret one’s chosen book and talk about technique.

Tuesday, May 6 - We will see examples of designs created by volunteer participants (hopefully, we can get 10 volunteers!) We will have discussion and hopefully come up with some great ideas of our own!

********At our regular March Meeting, this Tuesday, we encourage those who are interested in creating an arrangement to sign up with Shirley or Karen. We hope that these slots will fill quickly. Please speak to either one of us for more information. We are both very excited about the opportunity for our clubs to put together event for our community!

********Proceeds, after expenses, will go towards a gift of some sort to the library. This has not yet been determined, but we hope to give a permanent gift that will provide pleasure to our community for many years to come.
