Liberty Tree

The Hanover Garden Club and Walnut Hill  Garden Club joined in planting a Liberty Elm Tree to celebrate Hanover's 275th birthday. This effort involved Massachusetts Electric and the Hanover Department of Public Works as well. A Liberty  Elm was chosen specifically to help return elm trees to our towns. Linda Oman, President of WHGC at the time participated in the town's official celebration  to dedicate the tree which was held June 2002. This is yet another project in  which WHGC joined forces with other organizations to help community development.

This fall picture was taken the first year of planting, 2002.

More than a quarter of a million American Liberty elms have been planted in over 1,000 communities across the country since 1983, mostly by volunteers working to restore American elms lost to Dutch elm disease. The disease-resistant tree also is often chosen for ceremonial planting, symbolizing perseverance, discovery, and renewal.
