June 2003

Nutsey News by Gail Sardano follows this months' tips

What needs to be done in June:

*Don't forget paper or plastic collars around vegetable transplants to protect them from cutworms.

*Never cut off more than 1/3 of leaf blade when mowing lawns. Try  to keep a cutting height of 2-3inches. If the lawn has a noticeable brown tinge a few days after mowing, it's a sign that you need to sharpen mower blades. Vary mowing pattern each time  you mow. Mow lawns higher in shady areas.

*Apply water to gardens  only as fast as soil absorbs the water.

*Incorporate slow-release fertilizer into potting mix when preparing hanging  baskets.

*Plant sedum into the cracks in dry stone walls.

*Scratch some fertilizer  into soil around lilies and other summer blooming perennials.

*Use grass clippings as a mulch around roses if no weed killers were applied to the grass. Pinch back shoots of thyme, basil, and oregano when flower buds appear.
