If you haven't already signed up & paid for a project for the holiday workshop, please send your project form & check to Leslie Murphy no later than November 24th. We will accept walk-ins & guests the night of the workshop; however, if you wait we may not have the mechanics available for the project you'd like. First come first served.

NEW - We are going to have a white elephant table & are accepting donations of ceramic/terra cotta pots, baskets, candles, ribbon & bows, etc. the night of the workshop to sell that evening. These items should be clean & something you can imagine buying yourself.

Please bring a bag of greens- do not use hemlock or spruce for indoors. If you collect princess pine do not pull it from the ground, clip it. It is no longer on the endangered list but save the root anyway. Everyone (guests included) should bring a grocery bag of greens for the community pile so there is an assortment. Also bring clippers, scissors, a cardboard box for transporting your project, & something for the white elephant table. If you're making candlestick odaptors remember to bring candlesticks. Also, bring holly, berries, pinecones, rose hips, seedpods, lights, ornaments & anything else you may need or want to share.
If you're interested in learning how to make a bow, bring 3-5 yards of wired ribbon & floral wire. A ten-yard roll makes three bows.
Pictures will be taken so please dress in something colorful! QUESTIONS: Leslie Murphy or Ann Litka

Suzanne Fox & I were guests of the Squantum Garden Club & were entertained by Julie M. Weiss, Horticulturalist from Westford. During her program “Decorating with Holiday Greens” she gave us a handout containing fabulous information regarding which evergreens to use for arrangements, both inside & outside. Take a look at the enclosure before you cut your greens for the workshop.
The best tips (useful to me) are:
1. Cut rosehips AFTER THE FIRST FROST to prevent shriveling.
2. Boxwood is long lasting, dries natural & green. Some boxwoods have an unpleasant odor.
3. To add a visual for “line” in your arrangement use one of these- faciated willow, scotch broom, milkweed pods, ostridge fern pods, iris pods, miscanthus or other grasses.
4. Use local holly, other holly turns black when put outside.
5. Galax urceolats is beautiful & looks great in arrangements year round. And, you can grow it here!
6. Spruce & Hemlock drop their needles too quickly for indoor use. Only use for outside arrangements.
7. For a large basket arrangement meant for outdoors- don’t use oasis! Line the basket with a trash bag, fill it with carpenters sand (best) or play sand & add water. Do not use beach sand because of the salt. The stems stay put.

GCFM EVENTS
SHIRLEY MINOTT AWARDED!
At the annual FALL CONFERENCE of Garden Club Federation of MA Suzanne Fox accepted the Pauline D. Bowden silver teapot for Shirley Minott. It is presented to the highest point-scoring design during the week of the Topsfield Fair Flower Show, a Standard Flower Show. This involved at least 72 designs. This is the second year in a row for Shirley to win this prestigious award. Shirley will officially be presented another award at the GCFM Annual Meeting in June 2007. GARDEN THERAPY
Glenda Larson is prepared for the upcoming Legion Housing Holiday project & the Council on Aging project. If you are on her committee you should have already been given the dates. Two awards “Book of Evidence” have been put together for the state ‘Garden Therapy Award' & also a Regional award, 'The Mary Stone Garden Therapy Award', for work that has been done with our Hanover senior citizens. Our thanks go to Glenda & her committee: Gloria Brightbill, Kay Giardiello, Ann Litka, Kristi Oliveria, Dee Schmid, Marie Sisk, & those from last year: Tanya Ames, Joyce Kleinrath, Lisa Sheehan, & Judy Weber. Also, thanks to Suzanne Mahoney & Dee for helping with the BoE’s. Organizing it was harder than expected; the rules get in the way!

Inkjet cartridges, old cell phones, toner cartridges.
WHGC has special bar coded envelopes & boxes to send out used cartridges & cell phones to be recycled properly. We receive funds for this & at the same time save the environment. These are displayed with our fundraising items. Take as many as you want, pass them to your friends & co-workers.

CHILDREN’S ROOM
The JUNIOR DIVISION will be decorating the children’s room. Michelle Hardy & Helen Mischler will once again be leading this year - bravo to them! The juniors are meeting this Sunday at 1:00pm at the Hardy's home at (139 Cedar Street) to paint & decorate some ornaments. Decorations will be based on a Currier & Ives print with sleighs, ice skaters, etc. The ornaments are large wooden sleighs and sleds and snowflakes. Please call Michelle at 781-878-9831 for more information or to register with her. Juniors can sign up to be a host/hostess at this festive event during any one of the open house dates. Being involved in this event does not mean you are signing up for other Juniors meetings. They are announced and you can participate in any you choose.

KITCHEN
Four more of our members will decorate the kitchen, on their own & at their own cost, our thanks to Lorraine Gaysunas, Fran Hahn, Judy MacDonald, & Betsy Jackson, who are joined by their friends (see program). Their emphasis will be on gingerbread.

PANTRY
Judy Grecco has regularly done the pantry. It is easy to miss due to the traffic flow of the house. Pop your head in to see how nice she does this small space off the kitchen.

And, not to be forgotten, Rosemary Sampson works with the Stetson house team coordinating this event.
Further, Mugsie Sarson has been instrumental in this for years but I have not been updated of her exact involvement this year.
THANKS TO EVERYONE

It is suggested that you make your labels over the winter while you are placing your catalog orders.

HOSPITALITY – DUTY OF ALL ACTIVE MEMBERS
A note to those who are not familiar with what your duties consist of. Each club member is responsible for serving once during the club year as a member of the hospitality committee for a general meeting. When it is your assigned month, it is your responsibility to actively participate by contributing refreshments (size of one recipe) & assisting the Captain of that month & his/her other committee members for the setting up & cleaning up after the meeting. If you are unable to participate at the meeting assigned to you, it is YOUR responsibility to switch places with another club member & to notify your captain & the captain of the other person of the switch. The same applies for at least one COMMITTEE.

YEARBOOKS
CAPTAINS TAKE NOTE
Please see Sandra Woodward at the next meeting or make arrangements with her if you are listed below. You don’t know what committees you are on until you have your yearbook in hand. Captains take note: These members may have already missed assigned duties. If this has happened we need to reassign. Captains- please update the board of any missed duties.
Judy Bond, Brenda Crowley, Jo-Ann Golden, Louise Jackson, Cindy Trubiano, Kym Waitkus
If any of the above grabbed a yearbook without my knowledge please swap it for the one that was meant for you with your name in it. I need the unnamed ones and it tears the page if I remove your name from the one I have.

GARDENERS’ PALATE COOKBOOK
See Louise Sironi to buy one of the remaining copies of our cookbook.

TIPS FOR THE MONTH
*You should mulch roses when the ground is frozen.
*Cool night temperatures & uninterrupted dark each day are needed to force Christmas cactus into bloom. *Do not let houseplants touch cold window glass.
*Start paperwhite narcissus in December for Valentine's Day.
*Direct the snow blower away from shrubs. (Do I need to say that?)
*Use WiltProof on your Christmas Tree to prevent it from drying out.

NOTE TO BOARD MEMBERS
The manuals will have an addition of committee notes, over 25 pgs. Each folder will have what is relevant to that position. The red executive board manuals will have everything. Since there is no December board meeting you will get it back in January. I need ALL THE MANUALS back to be able to update them. Please get them to me AT THE DECEMBER WORKSHOP so I can get these done. THANKS SO MUCH
