TOPIARY without BASE $ 8

SWAG $10

$15

KISSING BALL $10 $15
*BOXWOOD TREE $15

$20

GRAPEVINE TREE $10 $15
*LIVING WREATH $10 $15

The club supplies the boxwood greens (included in prices). You should bring any other greens you intend to use. Do not use hemlock. If you collect princess pine do not pull it from the ground, clip it. It is no longer on the endangered list but save the root anyway. Everyone should bring a grocery bag of extra greens for the community pile so there is an assortment. Also, bring holly, berries, pinecones, rose hips, seedpods, lights, ornaments and anything else you may need or want to share. *Bring a large plate or cardboard bottom of a soda case to transport the living wreath (this MUST have support underneath for transport) and lg. box for boxwood tree. Don’t forget your clippers and scissors. If you intend to learn to make “good” bows bring wired ribbon & floral wire too. You can buy the wire at any craft store like Michaels, AC Moore, or Christmas Tree Shop. We will be selling extra oasis, and some mechanics from our ways and means inventory or extra home projects. Pictures will be taken so please dress in something colorful!

Something different this year at the workshop: Shirley Minott will be selling packages sets of theme decorations for the boxwood trees for $20 per bag. They may be angels, nutcrackers or similar.

QUESTIONS: See yearbook for phone numbers- Suzanne Fox, Gina Kmito, Leslie Murphy (husband sleeps in daytime, use email for Leslie)

The deadline has passed to order but you can take a chance and call Gina Kmito to see if there are extra supplies. GUESTS are welcome if they already signed up for a project or to do anything left over, but we cannot promise anything. Please remind your guest that they too need to bring a supply of greens for the community pile, as you will.

Gardeners’ Palate

We are now making an “ERRATA SHEET” to list typographical errors or omissions/errors found in the cookbook. A small insert will be included in you mailed version of this NN. Please put one in every copy you have already purchased. Please check any and all of your recipes for accuracy.

The cookbook company has told us that it is not unusual to have what seems like many errors, but as a percentage it is actually a small amount. We already know about Mrs. Smith’s Cookies: 2 cups flour, NOT ½ cup, Lu’s Brownies: corn oil, not cornmeal, Maui Punch: 1- (12 oz.) can frozen lemonade, not ½ cup lemon juice, Chicken Cordon Bleu: add to ingredients- 3 (1oz.) slices ham. Please advise Louise Sironi (with a copy to Sandra Woodward) of any error you notice, ASAP so we can get a notice out before Christmas baking. You can still buy - books will be available at the December Workshop.

We WON a 1st place publication award at the state level for our Gardeners Palate Cookbook and are a top ten award winner from Morris Cookbook Press for best cookbook.

WELCOME to our New Members

Nancy Dunn, Delores Schmidt, Kym Waitkus, Donna Collins

And those not mentioned in last month’s NN:  Joan Campbell, Susan Rogers, Rosemary O’Dea, Jennifer Clapp

“Books In Bloom” bench installation

A long awaited installation of the bench at the John Curtis Library is done to WHGC and Hanover GC’s specifications, approved by the trustees of the library.

For new members who don’t know about our “Books In Bloom” fundraiser, it can be seen on our website, www.walnuthillma.com. Be sure to stop by to view the bench, chosen by Karen Pritchard who chaired the committee, Shirley Minott who was the Design Chair and Linda Oman who was president while this massive project was planned and set forth. The style and material look perfect in the natural setting, blending with the granite and brickwork already outside the Children’s “Egg Room” in the lower level. We would like to thank Sue and Jim Vaille of Village Green Landscaping for the job well done!

Empty nylon net onion bags

Please bring them to the December Workshop.

BASKETS NEEDED

Glenda Larson needs donations of your left over baskets for their May basket projects. She would especially appreciate baskets 10-12” across and about 4” deep, with liners. If you work, please ask your workplace if you can save the containers left over after flowers have passed. Glenda will take liners separately to match with baskets without liners. Please check your garage and basement to see if you can donate anything. This happens every year so always save them for Garden Therapy.

Also, the “teapot” containers used at the banquet could be recycled for the Junior Gardeners. If you won one of the centerpieces and no longer want the container please donate it.

Inkjet cartridges, old cell phones, toner cartridges.

WHGC has special bar coded envelopes and boxes to send out used cartridges and cell phones to be recycled properly. We receive funds for this at the same time as we save the environment. These are displayed with our fundraising items. Take as many as you want, pass them to your friends and co-workers.

Hospitality and Committees – DUTY OF ALL ACTIVE MEMBERS

A note to those who are not familiar with what your duties consist of. Each club member is responsible for serving once during the club year as a member of the hospitality committee for a general meeting. When it is your assigned month, it is your responsibility to actively participate by contributing refreshments (size of one recipe) and assisting the Captain of that month and his/her other committee members for the setting up and cleaning up after the meeting. If you are unable to participate at the meeting assigned to you, it is YOUR responsibility to switch places with another club member and to notify your captain and the captain of the other person of the switch.

The same rules apply for committees.

Plant Sale Dig Day—DONE!

Special thanks to Linda Oman, Karen Wilson, Joan Campbell, and Ann Litka for joining Sandra Woodward at her home to bury the plants for the plant sale. It was a learning experience and fun at the same time. We are getting better plant material as our members’ gardens multiply!

TIPS for the month

·          You should mulch roses when the ground is frozen.

·          Secure loose canes of climbing roses to keep them from being whipped about by winter winds.

·          Cool night temperatures and uninterrupted dark of about 14 hours each day are needed to force Christmas cactus into bloom.

·          Do not let houseplants touch cold window glass.

·          Start paperwhite narcissus in December for Valentine's Day.

·          Direct the snow blower away from shrubs. (Do I need to say that?)

·          Use WiltProof on your Christmas Tree to prevent it from drying out.

THOMPSON & MORGAN HORTICULTURIST TIPS by ANDREW TOKELY

  1. Clean up Hostas growing in pots or in the open ground. Clean away all leaves that have now died down, and cut back old flower spikes down to the ground. This will leave the crown of the plants clean, with less chance of pest or disease damage. Plants that are in Pots should be moved to a sheltered part of the garden, or placed in a cold Frame for Frost protection. Plants outside should be marked, so you know where they are, and mulch around the crown with compost or leaf mould.

  2. Fruit Bushes will benefit from having thick mulch of well-rotted Farmyard Manure or Compost. This will help keep the ground free from weeds as well as add nutrients to the soil, and increase your harvest next year. Frequently check lifted Tuberous Begonias corms that are drying off. Remove decaying foliage and stems as it withers away from the corm. Always let the foliage gradually turn yellow and die down until it falls away naturally from the corm. Never cut foliage off early, as this is putting goodness back to the corm as it dies down. Once all foliage and stems have withered away, clean up corms and dust with sulphur, then store in paper bags in a cool frost-free place.

PEOPLE, PLACES, PLANTS Gardening Magazine discount Subscription form. This discount price will only be offered to subscribers until December. You can place an order for 1 year at $24.95 or 2 years for $44.95. USE OUR SPECIAL ORDER FORM, NOT YOUR RENEWAL FORM TO GET THIS DISCOUNT.
