January 24th           Board Meeting

February 7th           Family Night special time & place 7pm South Shore Science center (tentative location). BRING THE KIDS, THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE. Tropical Treasures- Trygve Swift, Wildlife Biologist and Senior Biologist for “The Big Dig”, will introduce us to the creatures of the rainforests. We will learn about the importance of tropical rainforests and some of the problems that face these critical habitats.

Here  is a description of one of his school programs.

Trygve Swift is the Environmental Engineer for the Ma Turnpike Authority - Central Artery Tunnel Project, essentially the Biologist for the Big Dig. He helps to save the environment throughout this enormous project. Trygve keeps up with his true love, teaching children, through his lectures. He specializes in topics such as (but not limited to) Intro to Animals, Reptiles and Amphibians, and Tropical Treasures.

I was fortunate enough to see him present a Tropical Rainforest program at a school. The group of children learned that one half of the earth's animals and plant life is from the Tropical Rain Forest (TRF) even though the TRF is only 5% of the earth's surface. Young volunteers took part in playing out the layers of the TRF, its Emergent Layer, Canopy Layer, Understory Layer, and Dirt Layer; this was the beginning of the children's excitement. The interaction between the speaker and audience is significant because the children took a great interest in the importance of keeping the rainforest from being deforested and saving its plants and animals from extinction due to loss of habitat. Terms such as "there are no gross animals" were used, my favorite was "If you care, leave them there" in reference to bringing home frogs, snakes, turtles, salamanders and the like found in the wild.

I saw the children interact with the cockroach from Madasgcar and a millipede that can curl up into a ball when scared. The poisonous So. American Marine Toad (aka Bufo Marinus) that blows up like a balloon when scared was especially interesting to the children as they learned that even though they have a large mouth, they couldn't swallow like us because their tongue is at the front of their mouth so their eyes sink down to push food down their throat. The non-poisonous African Bullfrog couldn't be touched because the salt from our skin dries out its skin. It needs a slime layer to get air through its skin. The iguana still had its full tail and the most anticipated part of the show was the Central American Boa Constrictor that eats "ratisciles". Anyone in this small group who wanted to touch the snake was allowed to.

I can imagine some students becoming more interested in the tropical rainforest and its creatures. All through the program Mr. Swift had full attention of his audience. And the children even listened when told to wash their hands after this fantastic program, which they did. Walnut Hill Garden Club is having a special "family night" to expose our children to the dangers associated with deforestation. I highly recommend him for your juniors. You can reach him at  (781) 837-8237 to book the program or E-mail him at trygveswift@lycos.com, or view http://trygveswift.tripod.com/wildlifeenrichmentprograms/id3.html

Trygve Swift has a Masters degree in Biology from Harvard University and a Bachelors degree in Biology from Hartwick College. by Sandra Woodward
