Brookwood Gardens

Once a nearly treeless pasture, this property has evolved over more than 20 years to become a gardener's paradise. Extensive borders contain hundreds of perennials, including many recent introductions to the trade, reflecting the owner's passion for plants. Shady beds boast more than 125 varieties of hosta, complemented by contrasting ferns, astilbes and woodland flora. In the sunny borders, collections of iris, daylilies and ornamental grasses are but a few of the treasures to be viewed. The garden is designated a National Display Garden for the American Daylily Society in conjunction with the adjoining garden, with more than 1000 cultivars between the two gardens. A meandering brook is bordered by a butterfly meadow and a small, tranquil water garden is nestled into a shady corner at one entrance to the rear gardens. As a garden writer, lecturer and plant hybridizer, the owner has developed these gardens with the intention to educate as well as delight visitors. S.M.
