Garden clubs to present 'Books in Bloom'   Article by Sandra Woodward & Louise Sironi
Wednesday, June 11, 2003
Shirley Minott, a Hanover resident and local authority on floral design, recently demonstrated to members of the Walnut Hill Garden Club and arrangers from the Hanover Garden  Club the art of creative floral arranging and how to prepare for an upcoming event on June 20th to benefit the John Curtis Library, "Books in Bloom."

The Hanover event, patterned on the Museum of Fine Arts' highly regarded "Art in Bloom" exhibition, will feature floral designs created by members of the two garden clubs in Hanover, the Walnut Hill Garden Club and the Hanover Garden Club. Club members will take their inspiration from books, movies or tapes chosen by each participant. Featured books and paired arrangements will range from children's books to adult fiction and non-fiction, from detective stories to biographies and more. Arrangers can even choose as their inspiration movies and music in the collections of the Curtis Library.

"Our enthusiastic members are gearing up to design floral arrangements that will complement books in the John Curtis Library," said Karen Pritchard, a Walnut Hill Garden Club member. "At least 42 arrangers are now making final decisions on the books they will use and are getting tips from Shirley (Minott) on how to interpret the theme, passages or any part of the written work as they see fit."

Minott's first workshop demonstration was for the novel, "Gone With the Wind." She took the Southern Belle theme and used magnolias to convey the idea. Using Scotch broom, a beautiful and graceful plant, she caught the movement of "wind" perfectly. The focus was on magnolias with lilac buds added to the arrangement, all contained in a silver candlestick holder. All in all, a magnificent design.

Moving on to the "The Wizard of Oz," Minott used poppies inserted into a hidden container placed on yellow painted bricks. Her emphasis was on "setting the line" for the arrangements. She used greens, flowers and "spikes" for contrast and for a change in texture and/or form.

One of Minott's hot tips for arrangements using tulips was to put a penny in any container. The penny reacts with the water to keep the tulips standing straight. Also, Minott emphasized that all flowers should be left to "drink" in conditioned water for 24 hours to ensure the arrangement will last.

In an announcement, Linda Oman, president of the Walnut Hill group stated, "Walnut Hill Garden Club has teamed up with Hanover Garden Club to direct their joint efforts, creativity and boundless energy toward staging this entertaining and elegant evening fund-raiser for the newly expanded and renovated John Curtis Library. Proceeds will go toward a permanent gift to the library that we hope will provide pleasure to our community for many years to come."

Said Oman in conversation, "Our new library is such a beautiful space. It's just crying out for a wonderful event like this one to encourage the public to come in, see and enjoy it."

Oman urged Hanover residents to "Mark your calendars,.. to reserve the evening of June 20, as anticipation is growing for this exciting event." The event starts at 7:00 p.m.

Continued Pritchard, "We expect a large turnout for the event as all of Hanover is justifiably proud of our new library! The last time Walnut Hill Garden Club held an event similar to this one (about 10 or 12 years ago), the feedback was phenomenal. People really enjoyed themselves! Others who had not attended were ultimately disappointed they hadn't gone. This event is a night you won't want to miss."

Betsey Josselyn of Hanover Garden Club produced a professional like DVD of the "Books In Bloom" event. Our local Comcast Cable Company has agreed to air it repeatedly until September 2003. Now you can share this event with all your friends and family. Show times start Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at 5:00 PM and again at 7:00 PM. Be sure to tune in promptly because I believe the DVD is only 18 minutes long.
