The landscaping around
the Town of Hanover's bandstand was barren in 1987, when built. It
remained that way for eleven years until WHGC members teamed together to
tackle the enormous task of landscaping the area without compromising
the area where the day camp is held in the summer. The material had to
hold up to hundreds of kids on a daily basis and leave the acoustics in
the area sound for the ceremonies, celebrations, orchestra, and band
performances. The low maintenance plant material was attractive , hardy
and able to survive the children. It also provided a beautiful blend of
colors. The local boy scout troop aided in some of the heavy digging and
rototilling. The Hanover fire department assisted with watering needs,
up until the minute they were unexpectedly called away.
Monies
were raised by speaker Paul Parent, speaker for radio 680 AM, lecturer, Video
host, and garden expert. His lecture attracted more than 300
people. We also sold a high quality pair of garden gloves to fund this
project.
Sandra Woodward,
Chairman, along with seasoned gardeners Suzanne
Mahler and Karen Pritchard as co-chairs spearheaded the group of many
hard working garden club members who also brought along family members.
The time spent selecting quality plant material and looking for the best
deals allowed the club to have left over revenue for future maintenance.
This site is cleaned up yearly and planted with fresh annuals and maintained
with mulched.
